The story behind our specialist MICE team

Blue Cube Travel launched its dedicated MICE team in 2016. During the previous three years, our business travel consultants had increasingly found themselves asked to support clients with group travel services, arranging meeting venues and handling bookings for incentive travel. This was usually for small groups of four to five delegates. We decided to monitor the frequency and size of this type of request. We also reviewed group travel rates and recognised that, although the traditional group size that qualifies for group rates is 10 people, the needs of a smaller group of five delegates are very similar. Our MICE service was set up initially with one team member to look after these smaller groups. Any requests for group travel made to our travel consultants were passed over. Blue Cube's account management team also began engaging with existing clients during review meetings and explaining that we now offered a dedicated MICE service. The business began to grow and soon additional team members were added, enabling us to split business opportunities into domestic and international. Our MICE services have truly taken off and we have already booked and managed events, for anything from 5 delegates to 1500. One existing client has spent over £145K since 2017. New MICE only clients include Paragon Sports Management, The Exetor Group, Hampleton Ltd, Purple Patch and Photobox Group. They have generated a spend of £160K this year. We have another £100K of MICE business in the pipeline.

Our biggest events have been for a FTSE100 technology company – two world meetings and three world parties over the last two years for 500 to 1500 people. This included the client’s global gatherings in 2016 and in 2017. Blue Cube’s M.I.C.E team became indispensable in planning and managing these events. The ‘World Party’ was held in October 2017 at Printworks in London’s Canada Water.

The staff attended from around the globe including UK, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Ireland, France and Denmark. Our team sourced the venue and arranged all flights, transfers and accommodation. We provided meet & greet services at London Heathrow, Gatwick and City airports, welcome packs and registration of delegates on the day of the conference. The Blue Cube team also organised activities for five groups of overseas staff who arrived in London a few days prior to the World Party. This included a speedboat experience on the River Thames, dinners and other entertainment. On the day before the World Party, the team organised an international party for 400 staff at a bar in the city. The World Party programme included break out perfume-making and chocolate-making sessions in the morning, and conference sessions in the afternoon, as well as a successful attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record for creating the largest ‘human pizza’. In the evening staff enjoyed a fabulous party with a performance by Craig David. The morning after, Blue Cube team members even hand delivered breakfast items for every delegate at their serviced apartment accommodation!
